She is the daughter of Harvey Welker, a Native American father as well as Julie Welker, an African American mother. Her father is an engineering while her mother is a realtor. Walker received her schooling in the Germantown Friends School located in Philadelphia's Germantown neighborhood, graduating in 1994. In 1998, she earned her graduation at Harvard College with a Bachelor's degree. Welker married John Hughes in Philadelphia, who was an acclaimed marketing director. The couple has two daughters.
